Justin’s HIV Journal HIV & High Cholesterol

People who take certain HIV medications often get high cholesterol as a side effect of the drugs. Recently my doctor told me that I have high cholesterol. But is it a result of my drug regimen? I had been taking Reyataz, Norvir and Truvada, all of which have high cholesterol as a possible adverse effect. It could be my genes or my lifestyle–or even a combination. I may never really know. But since high cholesterol increases your risk of having a heart attack or stroke, it’s time for me to make some changes. Here Comes Trouble My average cholesterol is 234.1; the average of my doctor’s patients is 185. My LDL, or “bad cholesterol,” is 143.1, which is borderline high. My HDL, or “good” cholesterol, is 52, which is good. (To learn more about cholesterol levels, go here.) My triglycerides were also high. High cholesterol runs in my family. For years I have known that my dad has it. Over the holidays I learned that my mother does too. This double shot of high cholesterol means that I really have to be careful, especially since being male and of African American descent may increase my risk of heart disease also. Fortunately I don’t smoke. Living for the Weekend Rather than immediately change my meds, which is complicated, my doctor decided that we’d first approach the problem by making lifestyle changes. There are two areas that I can take charge of on my own: eating and exercise. First I had to slow my cholesterol intake. Now that I’m 30, my body doesn’t process foods at the

Beer doesn’t have cholesterol. Also dietary intake of cholesterol doesn’t really impact serum cholesterol. You could go vegan and still have a cholesterol problem. You should just exercise and eat more fruits and vegetables and take the omega 3′s. EXERCISE. Beer doesn’t cause high cholesterol.

Hey Justin, wanted to let you know that I just got my latest test results back and I’m still neg. but I’m the one fighting cholesterol while Ron (who is on the same meds as you) his levels are fine. I too had to give up on the eggs & red meat. You’ve proven before that you can put up a good fight & with the love & support of your hubby, you’ll do just fine. Learn to look for his one raised eyebrow & don’t eat what is in your hand, that’s what I do. Luv From The Canadians

My best friends (who are on HIV meds) are also dealing with high cholesterol. I don’t notice it unless we’re out and I’m ordering a 12 ounce steak and they’re sitting there eating a salad. I wish you well.

justin , turn off paula dean.. that bitch is an enabler..lol i think she works for the pharmaceutical companies..and i like the idea of “fixing” yourself naturally.. it seems like one pill leads to another and another..good luck with your eating habit changes… i find if i change gradually, it makes it easier and more permanent.

I really like how you don’t say ooo poor me…but instead you have taken this and are trying to inform others and became a person that really wants to help others. I respect you for that!

It’s like you have a message now : Spread knowledge not HIV. And trying to wake people up. I hope you understand what I am saying…I stink at putting my thoughts and feeling into words..
Hope the cholesterol comes down. It’s in my family big time. My Dad had a heart attack at age 35.

    Keep fighting! ?
