Merck’s drug, similar to one that Pfizer was forced to abandon four years ago, helped patients in a study lower bad cholesterol and dramatically raise their good cholesterol. The data, reported at the American Heart Association meeting in Chicago, will revive interest in a class of medicines that may reach peak sales of $19 billion a year, according to one industry analyst.
